If you want to enjoy the High Pyrenees at their best, you do not have to be an experienced mountaineer. This itinerary makes sure you walk along the most rewarding but comfortable trails in the stunning and very varied landscapes of the Catalan Pyrenees. The high mountain flora is spectacular, chamois, bearded and griffon vultures are easy to spot, the quality hotels in typical mountain villages are welcoming. The local food is great and the perfect ending to a perfect day in the mountains.
We meet you in Ripoll, (transfers from other places are also available - please ask us for prices) from where we take you to Camprodon. In the afternoon you can visit the town, rich in historical buildings and cozy cafes and restaurants. Welcome meeting with our guide who will explain you the itinerary and will give you the GPS, the detailed hiking maps and all the information about the region.
Camprodón – Molló
Distance; 13,7 km - Walking time: 5 hours approx; +700m/-700m
You start your adventure along the valley of Camprodón, surrounded by lush green hills. The path gradually starts to climb through pine forest and meadows. The peaks of the Vallter mountains are now starting to appear in all its glory. The path now meanders over the vast alpine meadows and little by little you start to descend through a landscape dotted with typical Catalan farmhouses. In the valley below you can see your destination of today, the village of Mollo. You will walk along the “Cami de la Retirada”, (the path of retreat) that was used by the republicans during the Spanish Civil War to escape from Franco´s army when Barcelona fell in 1939. An estimated 90,000 people crossed the border here into France.
Molló – Setcases
Distance: 12,5 km, Walking time: 4- 5 hours approx.; +725m/ -640m
Today you have a spectacular hike over two mountain passes with impressive views: to the west, the spectacular Pyrenean peaks and to the east, the wooded hills of the Garrotxa. You start with a long and moderate climb to the Col de Fembra Morte (1,728 m), and you continue towards the Col de Lliens (1,864 m) – the perfect spot for a picnic. You continue on the northern flank of Puig de les Agudes before descending through lush pine forests, vast meadows where marmots and chamois can be spotted. You descend along lively mountain rivers to the authentic village of Setcases.
: Circular route Setcases
Distance: 13,7 km; Walking time: 5 hours approx; +615m/ - 1480m
Today you have the privilege to experience a high mountain walk without having to climb an excessive amount of meters. A short transfer (15min) takes you to the skistation of Vallter. After a gradual climb you arrive at the Coll de la Marrana, an excellent viewpoint. You are surrounded by peaks of more than 2800m high. You continue along a beautiful path through high alpine meadows where you might spot the elusive rock ptarmigan. You reach the peak of Les Borregues (2687m) with unforgettable 360º views. On clear days you will be able to see the Gulf of Roses! Take your time to stretch your legs before you start the long descent back to Setcases.
Setcases - Camprodón
Distance: 12 km; Walking Time: 4 to 5 hours; +397m/ - 697m
Today you stay low in the valley to walk from Setcases to Camprodón. Through the forest and farmlands of the valley, with its farms that seem to have stood still in time, you take an ancient path that has connected the villages for centuries. In the village of Vilallonga de Ter, the local shop is famous for its locally made ham and wine. Here you cross the river and continue the path that leads to the tiny village of La Roca. The viewpoint on top of the rock and the old streets are well worth a visit. From here the path continues along the river to the village of Camprodon.
Camprodón – Ribes de Freser
Distance: 20 km, Walking time: 6 to 7 hiking hours; +811m/ - 1276m
After a 10-minute transfer to the village of L’Abella, a spectacular, gradual climb follows through a wide valley full of wild flowers to the Collada Verda pass (1,606 m). The views over the valley and high mountain peaks are unforgettable. The hiking trail winds through pristine mountain scenery where golden eagles and griffon vultures soar high in the air. After a long but unforgettable walk we arrive in the village of Ribes de Freser.
Núria – Queralbs
Distance: 8 km; Walking time: 3 hours; +290m / - 970m
In the morning you take the funicular through a narrow gorge to Núria, an , a sanctuary at 2000m high. This historic building lies at a beautiful lake, surrounded by steep mountains that are the home of chamois. You can visit the monastery and the surroundings before you walk down the valley. The ancient path descends via narrow gorges and water falls. Your end destination is the typical moutnain village of Queralbs. Take your time to wander through the town. You take the train back to Ribes de Freser
